Penny Boat Session 1 Gr. 3-5
First Robotics Team (FRC)
Service Description
Participates will work to interactively on their penny boats during the challenge. At the end of the challenge we’ll review the science behind it. Participants will need to supply the following common household items: 6 inch by 6 inch square sheets of tin foil. Note that standard tin foil is 12” wide so it’s each to measure out a 6 inch sheet and it in half to get two 6 inch square sheets. Make sure to have several 6 inch square sheets ready to go in order to experiment with different designs. For example, 4 to 6 sheets. Pennies! You will need 110 pennies. Note there is a slight trick here. Make sure your pennies are all dated 1983 or later! Either that or all your pennies are dated 1981 or earlier. Do not use 1992 pennies at all!! We’ll explain why during the session! A bowl or deep pan of water large enough to float your penny boat. Please do not use a sink or a bathtub! We don’t want any pennies to accidentally end up in the drain… Typically the kitchen table or kitchen counter is an ideal location. Check with your parents.
